Representatives from research, industry and government internationally, with interests in telecommunications, are gathering in Taipei, Taiwan for the IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) 2025, taking place from 8 to 12 December 2025. Based on the theme of ‘Sustainable Communications for Ubiquitous Intelligence’, this year’s annual flagship conference comprises a rich programme of 12 symposia, together with tutorials and workshops, keynotes and expert panels, and a technology exhibition.

Always a pre-eminent date in the LRDC’s calendar, this year is no exception with LRDC Director, Prof Harald Haas and Research Associate, Dr Hossein Safi both attending.

Prof Haas will give a presentation titled ‘Has the Time for Optical Wireless Communications Finally Arrived?’, at 16.00 on 9 December during the Industry Programme, highlighting the evolution of optical wireless communications (OWC) from a research-driven field to the foundation of commercially deployed, scalable solutions.  In an exploration of how this technology is addressing critical connectivity challenges across diverse environments, while offering robust alternatives to existing wireless systems, Prof Haas will consider current limitations, present innovative pathways forward and demonstrate how OWC can future-proof global connectivity infrastructures.

Dr Safi will present three separate papers during the conference:

  • An Optical Wireless Data Interconnect for Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) Systems, C. Liu, O. Younus, and H. Haas – Physical Layer Studies workshop, Workshop Programme, 8 December
  • Energy-Efficient Precoding for Dense VCSEL-Based OWC Systems Under a Cooperative Broadcast Model, H. Safi, A. Ihsan, H. Eldeeb, B. Béchadergue, I. Tavakkolnia and H. Haas – Emerging Trends in Optical Wireless Networks workshop, Technical Programme, 9 December
  • Sub-Centimetre Indoor Optical Wireless Positioning Using An Optimised Machine Learning Technique, H. Eldeeb, O. Younus, S. Babadi, I. Osahon, R. Ahmad, I. Tavakkolnia, and H. Haas – Reliability and Security in Optical Networks workshop, Technical Programme, 10 December

Having a substantial presence at GLOBECOM each year, as well as other leading, international conferences, is one of the ways in which the LRDC can both share the technical insights from some of its innovative work as well as find out what fellow researchers are focusing on in other parts of the world.  Thus LRDC researchers are contributing to GLOBECOM’s aim of advancing technologies, systems and infrastructure that are continuing to reshape the world, and provide all users with access to an unprecedented spectrum of high-speed, seamless and cost-effective global telecommunications services.
