At a prestigious ceremony held on 28 October 2025, Professor Harald Haas, Director of the LRDC at the University of Cambridge, was granted the honour of becoming a FAU Ambassador, as an outstanding researcher who has both a glowing reputation in their research area and a particular connection to FAU, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
FAU Ambassadors are appointed as part of the Dies Academicus, which marks the formation of FAU back in November 1743. Today, FAU has approximately 38,000 students enrolled at its campuses in Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth, Germany, and promotes an academic culture of remembrance reflecting the university’s responsibility for its actions in research, teaching and administration.

FAU Ambassadors also represent the university at institutions around the world, sharing their experiences and insights with the global academic community, and acting as the face of FAU abroad. This recognition is bestowed as part of the wider FAU Awards, established in 2019, which offer the Executive Board of the University, the opportunity to honour outstanding commitment, deserving personalities, and academic and teaching achievements at FAU in a festive setting.
Speaking about receiving the award of FAU Ambassador, Prof Haas said “I am thrilled to be acknowledged by FAU for my contribution to the advancement of research in the area of high-speed wireless communications, building on my original work in the field of light fidelity (LiFi) technologies. Erlangen is also very close to my home town, so I am immensely proud to be a representative for this outstanding University.”
